Eilean Donan Castle Review: History & Visitor Guide

Eilean Donan Castle might be one of the most picturesque castles in the UK. That bridge (which was added at a much later date) adds a lot to this compact castle. I wouldn’t say visiting inside the castle is a must for £12, unless you love the visiting castles. I think I enjoyed taking photos from the outside more (important to note you’re prohibited taking photos inside). We visited in the afternoon, but wish we had visited in the morning when the tide was in (as you can see in my photos below, it kind of ruined my shots from distance)

I do think visiting the interiors of Dunvegan Castle and Dunrobin Castle is worth the price of admission however.

History of Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan Castle is one of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks, perched on a small tidal island where Loch Duich, Loch Long, and Loch Alsh meet — just before the bridge to the Isle of Skye. The site is named after Saint Donnán, a 6th-century Irish monk who is believed to have founded a monastic cell here around 580 AD.

The first fortified castle was built in the 13th century during the reign of Alexander II, to defend against Viking incursions. Over the centuries, it became a stronghold of the Clan Mackenzie and their allies, the MacRaes, playing a key role in Highland clan politics and the Jacobite risings. In 1719, the castle was garrisoned by Spanish troops supporting the Jacobites and was bombarded by Royal Navy frigates. The ruins lay untouched for nearly 200 years.

In 1911, Lt. Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap purchased the island and began a 20-year restoration, rebuilding the castle using surviving plans and stonework. Completed in 1932, the castle now stands as a romantic reconstruction — a tribute to Scottish heritage and resilience.
