I think Margate has the best independent shops in Kent. It’s my go-to place when I need to buy a gift (for myself and others). You’ll find a range of unique gifts for any age group or interest. The shops are spread out however, unlike a traditional high street, so it can be easy to miss some stores. I’ve mapped all my favourite stores I highly recommend.
Aarven
One of my favourite stores in Kent for ethical homeware and sustainable jewellery, you’ll find everything for all rooms of your home while the jewellery is made from recycled gold-tone brass, aluminium, silver and locally sourced, sustainable materials.
AARVEN’s designs are in collaboration with small-scale artisan groups and individuals across Africa and in India so what you’re buying is unique, sustainable and ethical. The shop is slightly hidden away so you might miss it.

Harbour & Tide is Margate’s quintessential sustainable beach shop, offering goods perfectly suited for seaside life.
Harbour & Tide provides everything needed for a day by the sea, from beach essentials like sunglasses, towels, and hats to a wide array of coastal lifestyle gifts. On A Whim
Perfectly self described as objects to spark curiosity and bring joy, On A Whim is the place to go for unique gifts.
Find everything from ceramic worms to magazines from Broccoli Publications (I bought Catnip) to fun artwork from local artists. You can also book workshops like signet ring carving and doggie tarot.
