I wasn’t expecting to enjoy Down House as much as I did. I really only went because it was a fairly short drive and I had a membership to English Heritage. It was interesting to learn about Charles Darwin’s life and work as I knew very little. But also his garden is beautiful and I was lucky to visit on a sunny day and during Halloween as you’ll see from my photos below.

History of Down House
Down House is a Grade I listed Georgian home in the village of Downe, Kent, best known as the residence of Charles Darwin. He lived here for 40 years, from 1842 until his death in 1882, and it was in this quiet countryside setting that he developed his theory of evolution by natural selection. Darwin described the house as “ugly” but ideal for his work — remote, peaceful, and surrounded by nature.
The house became both a family home and a scientific base. Darwin wrote On the Origin of Species in his study and conducted experiments in the gardens and greenhouse. He created the Sandwalk, a woodland path for daily walks and reflection. After his death, the house became a girls’ school, then a museum. It was restored in the 1990s and is now managed by English Heritage. Today, Down House offers a rare glimpse into the personal and professional life of one of history’s most influential scientists.
