Just imagine snow instead of blue skies (would you believe it rained two of the four days I was in Barcelona for my birthday?). These Gaudi designed houses wouldn’t look out of place near a Christmas tree.
If they haven’t monitored this idea yet, dibs! Have you been to the National Gallery in London? They’ve stuck Van Gogh’s sunflowers on an apron and everything!
Anyway, Casa del Guarda, to give the houses their proper title, are porter pavilions located at the entrance of Parc Guell.

This is all before you actually enter Parc Guell which offers more beautiful Gaudi designs including the famous lizard. And the view from the top isn’t bad either.

The history of Casa del Guarda
The Casa del Guarda, or the Warden’s House, is an integral part of the iconic Parc Güell in Barcelona, Spain. Parc Güell itself is a public park designed by the renowned architect Antoni Gaudí, and it is one of the city’s most famous landmarks. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known for its unique architectural elements, vibrant mosaics, and imaginative design.
The Casa del Guarda is situated at the entrance of Parc Güell and serves as the residence for the park’s caretaker or warden. It is a charming cottage-like structure that complements Gaudí’s distinctive style. The history of Casa del Guarda is intertwined with the overall history of Parc Güell.
Parc Güell was conceived by the wealthy industrialist Eusebi Güell, who was a prominent patron of Gaudí. Güell purchased a large plot of land on the hill of El Carmel and commissioned Gaudí to design a residential garden city. The original plan was to create a private housing development with communal areas and green spaces. However, the project faced numerous challenges, including financial constraints and a lack of interest from potential buyers.
In 1923, the Güell family decided to sell the park to the city of Barcelona. It was then opened as a public park in 1926. The Casa del Guarda, with its whimsical design, became an essential part of the entrance complex.
Architecturally, the Casa del Guarda reflects Gaudí’s distinctive Modernisme style, characterized by organic forms, vibrant colors, and intricate details. The building features a sloping roof with colorful ceramic tiles, irregularly shaped windows, and a combination of stone and mosaic work. The use of innovative construction techniques and materials is evident throughout the structure.
Over the years, Parc Güell and Casa del Guarda have become popular tourist attractions, drawing visitors from around the world. The park’s unique design and Gaudí’s architectural brilliance have made it a symbol of Barcelona’s artistic and cultural identity.
In recent times, efforts have been made to preserve and restore Gaudí’s masterpieces, including Casa del Guarda, to ensure that future generations can continue to appreciate the beauty of Parc Güell and its architectural treasures. The Casa del Guarda stands as a testament to the collaboration between Eusebi Güell and Antoni Gaudí and their shared vision of creating a harmonious blend of nature and architecture.
