Trunk luggage vs checked suitcase?
While trunk luggage and checked suitcases have similar capacities, trunk luggage is closer to a box shape i.e. larger depth but smaller width. These boxy dimensions may fit your vehicle trunk or storage at home better.

Is trunk luggage available in carry-on size?
Trunk luggage tends to be only in medium, large and extra large. I have found the July Trunk in carry-on size which I recommend.

- Material – Trunk luggage tends to be hard shell only:
- Polycarbonate – lightweight yet strong
- Aluminium – aluminium luggage is heavier and more expensive than polycarbonate, but it doesn’t crack. Instead aluminium suitcases tend to dent
- Zip vs no zip – zipperless luggage has risen in popularity due to it’s increased security vs traditional zipped luggage. However, zipperless suitcases tends to cost more
- Capacity – Trunk luggage capacity can range between 85 L to 125L

Solgaard Closet Original Trunk
One of my most favourite luggage in any category, the Solgaard Closet Original Trunk has the unique feature of a built in shelving system which also acts as a compression system so you can maximise the suitcase’s capacity. The shelving system can be removed and hung from a wardrobe rail so you never have to unpack (my least favourite part of the holiday).
It also has a zipperless system using 2 latches and is the most eco-friendly trunk luggage on the market, using recycled plastic for the lining. It’s also one of the most durable trunk luggage too, with a waterproof and scratch resistant polycarbonate shell and aluminium frame to help keep it’s shape during impact.
It’s one of the smaller capacity luggage on this list, but it’s also one of the lightest at just 10.3 lbs.

July Checked Trunk Plus
A close runner-up to the Solgaard Closet Original trunk, I think the July Checked Trunk Plus is the most stylish trunk luggage on the list. Inspired by 70’s stylings yet somehow looks futuristic at the same time, it comes in two finishes – matte and glazed.
Similar to the Solgaard, it features a zipperless locking system, polycarbonate shell and aluminium frame. However, the July trunk has a larger capacity by 19 L, heavier by 4.2 lbs, more colour varieties to choose from, a lifetime guarantee and 100 day trial. And if you’re looking for a carry-on trunk, July have a smaller version too.

Monos Hybrid Trunk
The smallest trunk luggage on the list, the Monos Hybrid Trunk looks slimer than it’s competitors as a result. Monos claim their Hybrid Trunk features an “unbreakable” aerospace-grade polycarbonate shell (however it’s not scratch proof). Monos also offer a lifetime guarantee and 100 day trial.

Level8 Luminous Trunk
The cheapest trunk luggage on this list I can recommend, that’s because I own the Level8 Voyageur and can attest to the quality despite the lower price compared to competitors. It features a scratch-resistant polycarbonate shell and zippers as opposed to a zipperless system. Level8 offers a lifetime warranty.

Traveler’s Choice Maxporter
Another cheap option to rival the Level8 Luminous, the two trunks could not be more different. Traveler’s Choice claim the Maxporter has a burst resistant zipper while the wheels are larger and cyclindrical which aids stability on uneven terrain. There’s also a clever strap on the front of the suitcase which allows you to strap a backpack and the handle is T-shaped which is more comfortable to use ergonomically. Traveler’s Choice offer a 5 year warranty vs Level 8’s lifetime guarentee and is slightly larger and heavier.
If you don’t mind the non traditional looks of the Maxporter vs the Level8 Luminous, I think the Maxporter offers more value for money.
