Packing cubes have become a must have travel accessory in the last few years. Packing cubes from brands like Carl Friedrik and July cost £70+, while the top rated cheaper alternatives on Amazon cost around £30. Are there cheaper alternatives? I bought two alternatives from Amazon and tried them out on recent trips.

Storage Master Vacuum Bags Review

I was trying to save money on my recent trip back to Glasgow and only had underseat luggage on my flight. But when it came to packing I realised I made a huge mistake – I didn’t have enough space.

Instead of buying packing cubes, I saw this 8 pack of vacuum bags. I’ve used vacuum bags for storing household items like winter duvets when not in use, but I’ve never thought about using them for travel. At £22, it was worth trying.

There are 4 small bags and 8 larger bags. They made a huge difference and save so much space. I can’t believe I haven’t been using vacuum bags for travelling sooner. I think vacuum bags present better value than packing bags since you usually only get around 4 or 5 packing cubes and they are smaller than the vacuum bags.

It also comes with a small rechargable vacuum so I don’t have to ask to borrow a vacuum wherever I’m staying…

Hanger Store Closet Review

I think the Solgaard Closet is one of the most unique suitcases on the market. It has a built in shelving unit which can be removed and hung from your wardrobe. The shelving unit also compresses your clothes too.

I like it so much, it’s my editor’s choice of zipperless suitcase too. But I also love my existing Horizn Studios M5 and Level8 Voyageur, both of which continue to work perfectly. So I found an alternative to the Solgaard which cost £20.

The Hanger Store Closet has 3 shelves plus a zipped compartment (which they suggest is used for washing like socks and underwear) and two straps and buckles to make compressing easier.

It’s been a game changer. Not only has it helped to save room in my luggage, but I also hate unpacking my clothes in the hotel, particularly if it’s only for a few days stay. With the Hanger Store Closet I just unbuckle and hang the unit in the wardrobe.
